What does this symbol 🚻 mean to you? It’s instantly recognizable. There’s no explanation needed. The power of symbolism has been demonstrated with that simple example. It’s easier to learn something new when using something we already know.
This is the entire purpose behind the captain theme.
What helps the student?
- The Captain’s Tools: Executive Function. This collection of techniques demonstrates the difference between wisdom and knowledge, logic and emotion, and helps students separate facts from feelings to make decision-making more objective and logical.

The captain is a symbol of the student’s mind.

You are the person at the center of your story.
A mind is world that is unexplored. Even the greatest minds of in history never understood it completely. Trying to understand it by oneself is hard enough, and for some reason, asking for help is taboo, or at least awkward, in many cultures. However, no matter the excuses, asking for help is not shameful.
To sail a ship successfully in the 1400s, the captain took information from his own senses, his crew, the ocean, and reality and made decisions. He had to understand how things work together to plan a trip from Place A to Place B. He (or she) had do that within his limitations. In modern days, this is the same way a student must conduct their life. Understand the mind, and reality shares its secrets.
Support
The captain’s crew is a symbol of the support from others.

You are not alone, and you were never meant to do everything by yourself.
For the student, the crew is made up of people who love and assist them. Life would be much less comfortable without farmers, transporters, teachers, police, and others.
Early captains could not sail a massive boat, such as a galley, by themselves. It would be impossible because there are too many tasks that need to happen. Even though we have many comforts nowadays, it is still impossible to do everything oneself.
Crew Member: The Cook The cook symbolizes the energy needed to get through a day. Kitchen utensils, such as forks and spoons, symbolize the tools we use to get energy.
In the Captain’s Manual, the cook is the student’s study habit, and the utensils are the techniques that assist learning, such as the Word Surgery or Lexicon Ledger. When a student sees material that needs to be studied, a natural feeling of resistance occurs, and they don’t want to work. Instead, try to think of it like eating. Tables and charts are used for education, just like utensils are used for getting food. We all need education just as much as we need food.
Crew Member: The Shantyman A sea shanty is a song sailors sing to keep productive during the work day. They needed to do a lot of hard work, and the rhythm of the song helped them all work together.
In the program, the shantyman is a symbol of keeping a good mood, and it reminds us that improving is rhythmical work—but it can be fun! There may be occasional references to more modern songs to bring a certain feel.
Here are more examples of real sea shanties used on the seas. Note, the Wellerman is a popular New Zealand whaling song sung for entertainment, not for work!
The Boat
The boat is a symbol for the body. It carries the captain (the mind) as it moves.

Moving around helps you think!
In real life, the human body gets weaker without exercise. Moving around also helps the mind think more efficiently. Just like the boat, if the body isn’t cared for, then it incurs health problems.
In history, big wooden boats needed to be cleaned, maintained, and repaired. A boat that rests in the harbor for too long starts to weaken. A moving boat allows the captain to become a better captain. A bad boat means the boat, the captain, and the crew all sink.
The Sails
The sails are symbols of the student’s effort and motivation to progress.

Some people wait for progress, but their sails are furled.
Sometimes one becomes too comfortable, and they stop trying to get better. It’s called complacency. Other times, things become too hard, boring, or uninteresting. This is a lack of motivation. When one is complacent or unmotivated, time still passes (see The Currents below), and things happen around oneself. When a person doesn’t carry themselves, it means something else will: time. Life is too short to waste time doing nothing.
In history, ships would be placed, or docked, in harbors (a parking lot for boats). Being docked at the harbor means the boat is safe, but it doesn’t let the boat sail the ocean. Docking for too long isn’t healthy because the water and animals destroy the wood of the boat. When the boat’s sails are furled (packed up), they’re not being used. When they are unfurled (down), the wind can fill them and push the boat.
Let the student unfurl their sails, and let the wind motivate them to progress.
The Ocean
The ocean symbolizes the space in which we all live, from the local environment to the universe, reality, and imagination.

Understanding the environment is important to learning how to live in it.
There are so many things that affect the mind (captain), one’s support (the crew), and the body (the boat). Social pressure, exercise, survival, dreams, goals, global climate, space weather, and everything in reality represent all the things a person must manage or live with. It easy for a person to be overwhelmed.
The Currents
The currents of the ocean represent the flow of time.

A boat that remains motionless is easily pushed around by ocean tides and currents.
Have you ever been faced with a situation in which both choices are equally bad, so you don’t make a choice? You don’t like the consequences for Choice A and Choice B, so you think it’s better to choose neither and avoid the consequences. However, there are even consequences for choosing nothing, which could be hidden and much worse.
A boat that has no power to move on its own is called a listless boat. It’s “dead in the water”, and it’s a dangerous situation for the people on such a boat in the middle of the ocean. Along the coasts, the currents push the boat down the shoreline, unless the anchor is dropped.
The anchor helps keep the boat in place when it’s dead in the water. Sometimes, lack of motivation or effort can make us lose sight of that anchor. One of the best anchors for a person is realizing that they are special in the world. There’s never going to be a person such as them. With the love of one’s support or one’s own self-love, a person can feel that anchor in their real life.
The Course
The course is a representation of how one chooses to live their life: where one wants to go, what one wants to do and believe, and how one wants to define their life purpose and meaning.

This is the journey which helps to define meaning and one’s life purpose.
Historically, the oceans of the world weren’t fully explored. They conveyed a sense of mystery and danger; they were a place of sea monsters, angry gods, and cruel fates. It took bravery and motivation to sail the ocean in vulnerable, wooden boats and discover the world.
The Fog
The fog is symbolic of spirituality, life after death, and the wonder whether or not anything is real.

There are millions of people who feel an unease about what happens after death. Do we live once? Do we live multiple lives? Who knows, but a lot of people feel like they do know. It’s important to explore this because it helps us appreciate our life for what it is: precious.
In the ship-sailing days of old, there was the legend of the fog. Being on a ship in the ocean in the middle of a fog gives an eerie sense of existing between worlds or time. Captains reported that this kind of fog was not really physically scary, but spiritually frightening. It shook a man so subtly to linger days after returning to everyday life.
