This is the understanding of what emotions are, what they do and need, how they impact a person, and how to process them. It’s the understanding that emotions are natural reactions to the mismatch between reality and one’s personal reality. A Learner understands that emotions are teachers, not threats. Hiding or suppressing them is harmful mentally and physically, so emotions seek to be felt, understood, and expressed. Other people’s emotions can also be understood vicariously through empathy. By putting oneself in other people’s place, one changes the frame of reference. Their feelings become the observer’s feelings. In the end, a Learner can say, β€œI understand,” and they truly do.
