A person who recognizes self-sufficiency understands the urgency of survival instinctively. A Learner no longer needs validation, affirmation, reassurance, praise, or even recognition for being themselves. Neither do they compare themselves to others and feel self-pity in the wake of it. They understand that everyone has their own background and personal problems, they are confident in carrying their own. They know the odds of survival and maintaining mental health are against them, but they move forward. This is the inner strength that keeps a person from giving up on life. If the courage to try is symbolized by the motivation behind a sailing ship, confidence is the keel of the boat keeping it from tipping over and sinking.
