Many individuals deny themselves opportunities because of the false pride of arrogance, also known as hubris. People sometimes forget to realize that everyone has blind spots in which rest neglected issues. Pride in work that is actually done by oneself is not the issue, but the hubris of arrogance in believing that one is beyond things that may actually improve their lives. A Learner realizes that living in denial that one is beyond reproach or further education can be amazingly destructive for one’s potential growth. This also symbolizes the ability to accept criticism and strong advice without becoming offended or defensive. Imagine a hull that is full of holes and the ship is taking on water. A captain proud of his responsibilities admits having allowed the hull to be damaged and starts to bail the water out with a bucket himself. A captain with hubris, however, refuses to acknowledge the mistakes that led to the damaged hull. He does nothing himself to start bailing the water to save his ship and crew. When someone is recognized for their helpful expertise, the feeling of being knowledgeable can balloons into related subjects, giving a false pride, wisdom, or knowledge where it doesn’t exist. The same could happen when someone defers to oneself. The Learner sees these and guards against them.
