This is the first half of the golden prize we all seek as humans even though we are already born with it. However, it’s likely the least utilized ability of all. It’s simply the ability to quietly, nonjudgmentally observe things as they happen without pretending to know or understand. It’s the highest form of objectivity: the watcher, watching the watcher, watching the watcher. The ability to delay the human’s natural tendency to label, define, and categorize something is a critical aspect of escaping the mindset trap. It is a trap because to achieve the Witness, we have to do the opposite of what it means to be human: playing along with the game. Assumptions and knowing have been addressed in previous powers, but here is where they should be applied first and foremost. Don’t assume, don’t know, don’t judge; just watch.

By doing so, we elevate our frame of reference. We become a passive watcher of what happens. Imagine a captain who sails a ship, but no matter what they do, they cannot affect the course. The ship sails where it goes without the captain’s will. It might be saddening at first, but it can become similar to the feeling of floating relaxed on a flowing current. The only thing left to do is to watch what the ship sails by. The game of life reveals itself, and everything becomes visible.

All things were visible from the start of life; we just had to slow down and let go of the wheel.

The Witness is the part of us that is the passive observer. It’s a powerful ability because it is the wise pause before the action. It sees everything: how life leads to death, how death leads to whatever happens after we die. It’s the cycle of physical life, and it causes the self to face metaphysical questions of existence: why am I here, what happens after I die, is this the only reality? Through these questions, we are forced to face how much we don’t know. In doing so, we unlock an even higher perspective than life, and we understand that we are part of the same power that created everything.
