This is the ability to avoid surrogate transcendence and take one’s own salvation as a personal responsibility. The power to do this is in all of us, and we mustn’t give it away or fool ourselves into thinking that we need a savior. This could be the difference between religion and spirituality. When we believe that we need a savior, we weaken the power naturally seated within us. The belief in a god is a personal choice, and there’s nothing wrong with it. However, if the religion is so far away from the spiritual message it proposes, then we may need to discern the honest truth more carefully. There’s a powerful distinction between the person who says, “God will handle it because He will protect me and is responsible for my soul,” and the one who says, “With God’s help, I will make it through by myself”. The first gives away responsibility for their soul, while the second has a helping hand. A Learner understands that help is acceptable, but the ultimate responsibility of salvation lies with the self.
