Emotions would say, β€œI need this to make me happy,” but logic interrupts. β€œThat’s not the source of lasting happiness.” Temperance is the way to maintain balance in all things: manage expectations, maintain a healthy diet, taking a break from work to get some exercise, and more. It’s a key aspect of walking a path between shadow and light equally. For example, hope uses expectations like gold coins in a treasure chest, but logic remembers. It uses background knowledge to temper expectations, managing the emotions involved so that one doesn’t loose balance, like a captain managing the ocean swells to prevent capsizing. On managing expectations, it isn’t about lowering them to avoid disappointment. One will feel disappointment anyway because we can only manage emotions, not control them. Instead, a Learner changes their mindset to say, β€œI’m glad I didn’t get that job because it isn’t for suited for me. Maybe I avoided some future troubles because this door closed for me.” There will be other opportunities, and one will be the most suitable.
