# Overview

Moral Self

Definition
In the program, emotional resilience is a person’s ability to recover from negativity, whether it be mental states, societal unfairness, or social drama. Downward spirals of emotional pain can turn into a dangerous whirlpool of recurring cycles. Emotional resilience is the scar after a wound, and through your own power and with the help of your support group, you emerge—not bitter for having suffered—but wiser for the experience. You rally your somber thoughts, and, in the shadow view of negativity, you choose to focus on the bright side.

1. How can I avoid a spiral?

Being resilient against negativity is critical to your mental state and self-worth. If you aren’t in a good place emotionally, it could take just one more negative remark or consequence that sets you off into a repeating series of harmful, negative thoughts.

1.2 Release Negativity

Negativity isn’t an enemy. It’s a necessary part of life that pushes us away from what we don’t prefer and motivates us to find what we do. That being said, negativity isn’t something that we can carry for long because it’s too heavy mentally. It’s tiring, and it weakens us over time.

Info

The key to negativity is understanding it and letting it go.

1.2.1 Venters

The people in point #3 simply need emotional support. They need to find someone to vent their frustrations and just complain. Usually, they feel better after having done so.

1.2 Defenseless Harbor

We needn’t take every negative comment seriously. If we made ourselves vulnerable to every such remark, we would never leave our houses because we would be too afraid of getting hurt.

It’s important to strengthen yourself against negativity, and consider who is spreading the negativity. If it’s a total stranger, you ought not care much. If you care about that person’s words, why not the other 3.8 billion people on Earth? No, there are too many strangers in the world for that. If it’s someone you care about, then care, but only up to what you are willing to correct.

Mental health is just as important as physical health. While this is covered more in other lessons (Emotional Intelligence and Emotional Management) it’s worth exploring here. Your well-being depends on your boundaries. Without boundaries, you are vulnerable to attack.

We will now use the captain theme to demonstrate the usefulness of boundaries. Imagine that your captain has created a harbor city with no defensive walls.

  • Your city welcomes anyone to come and take whatever they want. Most people sail into your city with good intentions, and there is no problem.
  • However, the city has no defense from pirates. They come to extort your city for its treasures.
  • Without any defense, what will happen to the city’s money?
  • What does the future look like for your city?
  • Now imagine that you are a person that behaves like the city. Instead of letting pirates in, you let people’s negative comments affect you. These passing comments come from people you know and total strangers. They may say them to purposely or accidentally hurt your feelings.
  • How will you feel?
  • How long would you let these “pirates” steal your “money”?

Each time you accept negative comments from people, you lose a part of yourself because you allow yourself to believe what they say. You do this because you don’t have boundaries, and you don’t know how to set them.
